Nancy Forde is a writer and documentary photographer with dual citizenship in Canada and Ireland. In 2021, she earned her MA in Photojournalism and Documentary Photography from University of the Arts, London (UK). Her photographs and words first appeared in The Island Review via a personal essay, Anaana (Mother). Ecology & Action Magazine published more of her words and photos in An Abundance of Joy (Fall 2024 Issue) and Restoration as Ritual (Spring 2025 Issue). In 2026, Nancy completed her MFA in Creative Writing at University of King’s College where she was announced the university’s 2025 winner of a Canada Graduate Scholarship by the Social Sciences & Humanities Research Council of Canada. The scholarship goes toward research for her current work-in-progress: an eco-lit, big idea, creative nonfiction book on bogs, Iron Age bog bodies, and planetary preservation. Nancy dedicates her essay ‘Root Vegetable’ with deep love and gratitude to her Dublin-born, nonagenarian parents, Pádraig and Siobhán, who met at 16 years of age and will celebrate 75 years of marriage next year. As well, to the memory and spirits of her Irish ancestors and to her wondrous son, Lochlann, who makes her feel more rooted every day. She can be found online at nancyforde.com.

A single parent and survivor of infertility struggle, Nancy’s research interests include fertility and infertility in both humans and environment. Her work champions mental, maternal, and reproductive health along with the rights of women, the 2SLGBTQ+ community, Black Lives, Indigenous Peoples, and Earth/environment. Her ongoing research into preservation posits Earth as a ‘Deep Time Photo Album’ that holds memory and occasionally unearths ‘pictures’ as reminders of its past and warnings/pleas about its possible futures. She’s drawn to the role of photography related to memory, remembrance, death, grief, light/shadow, healing, health, ritual, and storytelling.
