Russell Rolen is a cellist, educator, and arts leader driven by a belief in music’s transformative power across performance, education, and community life. His multifaceted career bridges concert stages, classrooms, and cultural institutions, reflecting a commitment to making music more inclusive and impactful. He was a founding member and executive director of the renowned Spektral Quartet throughout its twelve-year tenure, helping shape its artistic vision and leading its organizational growth. He currently serves on the Artist Faculty of the Chicago College of Performing Arts at Roosevelt University, where he teaches cello and chamber music, and is on the staff at Midwest Young Artists Conservatory, where he coaches chamber music and supports development efforts.
Russell’s teaching career has included work with musicians of all ages and levels, from kindergarteners to conservatory students to 85-year-old retirees. He has held teaching appointments at Northwestern University, the University of Chicago, and Ripon College, where he also served as orchestra conductor. As a member of Spektral Quartet, he has led residencies, masterclasses, composition workshops, and entrepreneurship seminars at major music schools across the U.S.
Outside the music world, Russell served as Associate Director of Programs at Rebuild Foundation, where in two years he produced over 80 cultural events and led a major archival project preserving the 5,000-piece vinyl collection of legendary DJ Frankie Knuckles.
He holds music degrees from the Peabody Conservatory, University of Wisconsin–Madison, and Northwestern University. His broad artistic training and career reflect a lifelong pursuit of musical experiences that challenge convention, build community, and foster deeper human connection.
