Published with Humans & Nature Press

Laticia McNaughton is an enrolled member of the Six Nations of the Grand River Mohawk Nation, Wolf Clan, raised in the Tuscarora Nation community in Western New York. A fluent Mohawk language speaker, she is a photographer, artist, maker, gardener, and cook whose creative life is deeply rooted in relationship with the natural world. She resides in Buffalo, New York.

Laticia is a PhD Candidate in (Native) American Studies at the University at Buffalo, where her research — “Haudenosaunee Food, Health, and Wellness Traditions” — is nearing completion. Her work examines Haudenosaunee (Iroquois) food history, food sovereignty practices, land-based knowledge, language, and wellness traditions. She holds an MA in Native American Studies from the University of Oklahoma and a BA in English and Anthropology from Buffalo State College.

Her personal wellness journey navigating diabetes and chronic illness informs her scholarship and inspired the creation of her blog and social media platform, the Indigenous Food Revolutionary, which promotes Indigenous wellness, recipes, cooking workshops, foods, and language. She is also the founder of the Native Artists Online Market group on Facebook.

Laticia has been recognized with numerous grants and fellowships, including the Humanities New York Public Humanities Fellowship, the American Philosophical Society Phillips Grant for Native American Research, and the Arthur C. Schomburg Fellowship. Her photography has been featured in USA Today, Cowboys and Indians, Heirloom Gardener, and other publications.
